Itinerary
Day 1: Check Into Legendary Lodge | 1 Night
Welcome to Tanzania, on arrival and after completing customs requirements you will be met by your safari guide and transfer to the outskirts of Arusha for a stay at the chic Legendary Lodge.
Check into your room and relax or head out for some activities to stretch and acclimatize just before your ascent to the roof of Africa, you can mountain bike through the coffee plantation taking in the aroma and sights, visit the Ngurdoto crater or head off for a game drive in the nearby Arusha national Park, for the more active you can partake in a game of squash of tennis in the nearby country club.
Day 2: Lace Up Your Hiking Boots | 8 Nights
Meet up with your mountain guides and logistics team and head out to the Lemosho route starting point, take the first steps towards the greatest challenge as you go through Afromontane forest, in the distance curious black and white colobus monkey swaying from tree to tree, we shall reach Forest Camp our stop for the night in the mid afternoon.
The crew will assemble the camp and begin dinner preparation, enjoy the views before settling down to a delicious dinner and looking forward to the second day of this epic adventure.
Day 3: Forest Camp to Shira 1
Breakfast and with Lemosho forest behind us, we shall reach the shira plateu having passed podocarpus and juniper tree. We shall have a picnic lunch on the way while enjoying the beautiful scenery
The scenery will change as we move forward, we reach Shira 1 Camp in the mid after and set camp here for the night as we prepare for our trek in the next day as we approach then more steeper area of the Shira Plateau.
Day 4: Shira 1 to Shira 2
As we reach a significant altitude you will notice the change, we shall make ascend to reach Shira 2 Camp in time for lunch and our home for the night. After lunch relax at the camp to help your body replenish and acclimatize at this new altitude, the guides may head off for an optional walk high up the plateau, if you can join them it will be a plus as the walk up and down this higher point will help your body adjust to the new oxygen levels and prepare you for the next day’s trek.
Day 5: Shira 2 to Lava Tower
Leaving the Shira Plateau we reach the alpine desert belt, the deserts have little rain, plant life and animal life and can be extremely cold during the day, put on an extra layer of warm clothing as we reach the camp for lunch. Later in the afternoon you can take the optional trek to the Lava Tower.
Day 6: Lava Tower to Karanga
Our walk today will be longer as wed head out towards the Karanga Camp, reaching the camp in late afternoon, Karanga as the most spectacular sunset and views a fitting reward after a hard day walk, at 3000 ft look at the majestic southern glacial valleys and ice fields, later retire to the warmth of your tent to rest ready for the next day.
Day 7: Karanga to Barafu
Today we begin our hike to Barafu Camp, arriving at the camp by lunch time, the trek will be windy as we are not far from the summit, in view will be the craggy and jagged Mount Mawenzi. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and acclimatizing.
Day 8: Barafu to Kibo Crater
Today we begin our hike to Barafu Camp, arriving at the camp by lunch time, the trek will be windy as we are not far from the summit, in view will be the craggy and jagged Mount Mawenzi. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing and acclimatizing.
Day 9: Sitting On Top of Kilimanjaro!
Our reward is within reach, though we have taken the longer route, this has allowed us plenty of time to adjust, we set off for a short walk and within the hour make it to the summit to a welcoming sunrise breaking above the clouds.
You are at the roof of Africa, the highest point of the African continent, later we shall begin our descent to Mweka Camp, where now adjusted, you shall get a feeling of achievement and celebration, and a sense of enormous happiness.
As we descent we shall take in the last night days and ups and downs of challenging the world’s highest standing mountain, the descent will take us less than a day through the endemic proteas and flittering malachite sunbirds. Our final night will be a time to share stories having achieved the challenge of scaling Africa’s roof.
Day 10: Back to Arusha | 1 Night
Breakfast and we make our way further down to the starting point of our journey, your transfer vehicle will be waiting, and as we say the goodbyes, take the last memorable photos of the team that helped scale Africa’s highest point, dole out tips and special thanks, look back to the adventure achieved, drive back to Arusha to a warm welcome at the Legendary Lodge for the overnight.
Day 11: Farewell Tanzania
Take a hearty breakfast of the best coffee ever brewed and transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport, you can decide to include a visit to Zanzibar to relax after an arduous trek, to soak in some sun, sand and sea, continue with your onward travel arrangements.
