The Great Wildebeest Migration through the Serengeti–Mara ecosystem is one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles on Earth—so extraordinary that it’s often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”
Each year, over two million animals—including wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle—embark on a perilous journey in search of fresh grazing in the Masai Mara and calving grounds in the Serengeti. This epic migration is a constant cycle of life, death, and renewal, unfolding across vast plains and treacherous rivers.
The iconic river crossings, especially at the Mara River, are scenes of intense drama as the herds face formidable predators and lurking dangers. Nile crocodiles wait patiently in the water, while lions, leopards, cheetahs, and hyenas lie in ambush along the migration route, ready to strike. It is a journey of instinct, survival, and endurance—an unforgettable experience for those lucky enough to witness it firsthand.
The Migration takes a full year to complete a single cycle, which means that you can witness different stages throughout the year. But because the animals cover huge distances, certain highlights only happen in specific months:

The above are guidelines only. The Wildebeest Migration is a year-round journey and the river crossings cannot be predicted, although they generally occur between May and September. Sometimes the herds stay put for two weeks, other times they could cross four times in one day!
Since 1998, we’ve helped thousands of travelers from across the globe to witness one of Mother Nature’s greatest spectacles. Based on our first-hand experience and local knowledge, here are our top tips on planning a Wildebeest Migration Safari.
The Maasai Mara and Serengeti combine easily with each other, and each can also form the focal point of a larger safari itinerary. We recommend combining the Maasai Mara with Amboseli and Laikipia, or adding the Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and the Rift Valley Lakes to the Serengeti.
A Wildebeest Migration experience can get busy, noisy, smelly, and far removed from a general Big 5 safari. We highly recommend ending at a lodge or camp that’s located away from the herds to enjoy a bit of tranquility and a diverse game viewing experience.

Booking early is essential—ideally a year in advance.
Due to high demand during the Wildebeest Migration, especially between July and October when the dramatic river crossings occur, lodges and camps in the Masai Mara fill up quickly. Late bookings often miss out on the best locations. Timing is everything.
Plan your safari based on what you want to witness — whether it’s the calving season in the Serengeti or the thrilling crossings in the Mara. For a more intimate and exclusive experience, consider private conservancies or reserves bordering the national parks. These offer front-row views, fewer crowds, and a truly immersive safari atmosphere.
