Africa’s Premier Gorilla Trekking Destination

Volcanoes National Park, located in the northwestern corner of Rwanda, is one of Africa’s most iconic primate sanctuaries. Encompassing a lush expanse of dense rainforest and bamboo groves, the park is part of the greater Virunga Mountains—an awe-inspiring chain of extinct and active volcanoes shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Renowned for its population of endangered mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park offers one of the most accessible and rewarding gorilla trekking experiences in Africa. Despite the rugged terrain and steep altitude, the trek is often described as the most manageable of East Africa’s gorilla destinations, making it a favorite among adventurers and wildlife lovers.

Park Highlights

Home to over 300 mountain gorillas—nearly half of the world’s remaining population. Visitors can trek to see habituated families up close in their natural habitat.

Endemic and endangered, golden monkeys are playful and energetic primates that inhabit the bamboo forests. Trekking permits are required and well worth the experience.

Though elusive, forest elephants, bush pigs, and various antelope species roam the park’s lower regions.

A birdwatcher’s paradise with more than 200 species, including Albertine Rift endemics, and a dazzling array of butterflies.

The park includes five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga range. Adventurous hikers can summit Mount Karisimbi, Rwanda’s highest peak, on a challenging two-day trek.

Trek to the Karisoke Research Station, the base of legendary primatologist Dian Fossey. Her dedication to gorilla conservation lives on, and the 2-hour hike to her tomb is both moving and scenic.
