Ngorongoro Crater
Guide

Ngorongoro Crater

The region may be compact in size, but it delivers one of the most extraordinary safari experiences in Africa. Located in northern Tanzania, this vast volcanic caldera is often called the Eighth Wonder of the Natural World, and for good reason — its high walls encircle a wildlife-rich Eden that feels timeless and untouched.

Set within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, formed over two million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed. Today, its fertile floor supports a permanent population of wildlife, making it one of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five in a single day.

Wildlife in Ngorongoro

The Crater is home to an exceptional concentration of animals, including elephants, buffalo, lions, leopards, and the critically endangered black rhino. You’ll also find large herds of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle, as well as hippos wallowing in freshwater pools and thousands of flamingos gracing Lake Magadi’s alkaline shores. Because of its closed ecosystem, game viewing here is both reliable and spectacular.

Where to Stay

Luxury lodges perched on the Crater rim offer breathtaking views into the basin below. From here, it’s just a short descent to the floor for early-morning game drives. Standout properties include &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, known for its opulent interiors, and The Highlands, a more remote, design-forward retreat nestled on the slopes of Olmoti Volcano.

When to Visit

Ngorongoro Crater is a year-round destination, with wildlife present throughout the seasons. The dry months (June to October and January to February) offer the best visibility and game viewing, while the green season (November, March to May) brings lush landscapes and fewer crowds.

Getting There

The Crater is around 170 km west of Arusha, accessible by road or scheduled flights into Lake Manyara Airstrip. It pairs perfectly with Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, Tarangire, and Zanzibar for a complete northern circuit itinerary.

Whether you’re drawn by its unique geography, remarkable wildlife density, or simply the opportunity to explore one of Africa’s most iconic natural wonders, Ngorongoro Crater offers a safari experience like no other.
