AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK

Kenya
One of Kenya’s most iconic safari destinations, renowned for its sweeping landscapes, large elephant herds, and stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro—Africa’s tallest mountain. Located in southern Kenya near the Tanzanian border, this park offers a dramatic and unforgettable safari experience.

A Land of Giants
Amboseli is often referred to as the “Land of Giants” for its large population of free-roaming elephants, many of which are famously photogenic with long tusks. The open plains make spotting wildlife easy, and visitors are often rewarded with classic scenes of animals moving across the savannah with Kilimanjaro as a majestic backdrop—especially at sunrise and sunset.

What to See and Do
Amboseli is not just about elephants. It’s also home to:

  • Lions, cheetahs, hyenas, and jackals

  • Buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, and giraffe

  • Over 400 bird species, including pelicans, kingfishers, and birds of prey

  • Seasonal wetlands and swamp-fed lagoons that attract hippos and water birds

Activities in the park include:

  • Game drives with fantastic photo opportunities

  • Cultural visits to Maasai villages

  • Nature walks in private conservancies surrounding the park

  • Scenic flights over Mount Kilimanjaro (by special arrangement)

Best Time to Visit
Amboseli is a year-round destination, but the dry seasonsJanuary to February and June to October—offer the best wildlife viewing as animals gather around water sources. The wet season (March to May and November to December) brings lush greenery and fewer crowds but also muddier roads.

Getting There
Amboseli is about a 4-hour drive or a short flight from Nairobi, making it easily accessible and a great addition to any Kenya safari itinerary, especially when combined with the Masai Mara, Laikipia, or the coastal region.

Where to Stay
There are a range of accommodation options inside and around the park—from luxury safari lodges with views of Kilimanjaro to eco-friendly tented camps and family-friendly resorts. Some lodges are located near waterholes, offering incredible armchair wildlife viewing.

Why Visit Amboseli?
Amboseli’s compact size and rich biodiversity make it ideal for first-time safari-goers and photographers alike. The breathtaking scenery, intimate wildlife encounters, and unique chance to see elephants against the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro make it one of Kenya’s must-visit safari parks.
