7 Day Uganda Fly-In Gorilla, Chimp and Wildlife Safari

This 7 day adventure takes you to the rainforest and savannas of Uganda, as you discover the world of the chimpanzees and gorillas in some of Uganda’s most virgin wildlife reserves. On arrival in Entebbe you will connect to your flight to Kasese, where you will be met and transferred to Queen Elizabeth National Park where apart from game drives, you will enjoy exhilarating activities such as trekking the chimps in Kyambura Gorge and cruising on the Kazinga Channel. Your accommodation here overlooks the magnificent Rwenzori Mountains After, we head out to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, as we search for the endangered mountain gorillas, the area is also rich in hundreds of endemic bird species and butterflies, visit the community centers and Batwa villages to learn more about the rural life of these indigenous people, who still keep to their traditional way of life.

Itinerary

Welcome to Uganda, on arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be assisted to connect to your 2 hours flight to Kasese, on arrival at Kasese, a small town near Lake George, you will be met by your safari guide and take the two hours’ drive through local farmlands and villages to the Queen Elizabeth National Park, your home for the next 3 nights will be the Kyambura Gorge Lodge.

Kyambura Gorge Lodge has the most stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains, and is set on a former coffee plantation right at the foot of the mountain. The rooms consist of thatch and timber, that are each uniquely decorated. The meals are delicious and taken in a dining room with communal table, sundowners are enjoyed in an open veranda. Enjoy game drives in the Kasenyi plains as you look out for the big mammals such as Unganda kob and lions, explore the dense Mweya the Mweya peninsula, for hiding leopards, the highlight of the day will be the trek in the Kymabura Gorge as we look out for families of chimpanzees as well as nine other primates.

Chimpanzees are the smaller cousins of gorillas charming, intelligent, cunning and expressive – the day will be filled with all sorts of magical encounters. On one of the days visit the Women’s Coffee Co-operative and the Omumushaka Dance Troupe enjoy local dances as you learn about the rural life of Ugandans, and how the partnership between the community and local lodges has helped to reclaim wetlands, set up a beekeeping station and create the Empundu playground for children. Top up your experience to Queen Elizabeth National Park with a final afternoon cruise on the Kazinga Channel, which pours between Lakes George and Edward, the channels has one of the densest concentrations of hippos found anywhere, as well as large numbers of elephants, crocodiles and water birds like African fish eagles and pelicans.

Breakfast and we depart Kyambura Gorge Lodge for the six hours drive to Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge, your home for the next 3 nights as you explore the Bwindi tropical rain forest, which despite is awe inspiring name is a wonderland, as we drive and make a stop at Ishasha, be on the lookout for a pride of tree climbing lions that have made an old fig tree their lookout.

After a full day on the road, watch as the landscape changes and check in at the ecofriendly Volcanoes Bwindi Lodge, located in Bwindi Impenetrable forest, an acclaimed world heritage site, that boast only eight thatched suites with stunning views of the surroundings, steep hills, dense jungles and towering tree fill the distance. Early breakfast and set out for your trek as you go in search of the four known habituated gorilla families in Bwindi , the families are accustomed to human presence, the trek is arduous and you will need to be fit, go through the dense vegetation as your guide and trackers cut a path , steep hills amidst the humid air, your guide and trackers will signal on first view of a gorilla family, watch them as they eat, groom, play and nap, you will feel like you have known then all your life, with their familiar human behavior and expressions.

A mist inspiring moment as you come face to face with these highly endangered creatures in the wild. On returning to the lodge enjoy a massage from the in house therapist to relax the muscles after a full day trek, or take a dip on the swimming pool to stretch with a couple of laps. After a well-deserved rest from the previous day trek breakfast in the morning and you can decide on your day’s plan, today you could visit the local community hospital to learn more about its work serving more than 60000 people, or visit a tea processing plant, you could also take a guided walk in the rain forest as you look out for hundreds of bird’s species, local and rare plants and exotic orchids.

Visit the Batwa of Bwindi, to get a greater understanding of the forest eco system, that host both human and animal life, learn the hunter gatherer skills of the Batwa people that they are happy to share with visitors, the Batwa people have inhabited Bwindi Forest from time immemorial, and although changing to modern ways still maintain some of their traditional customs.

After six days exploring the greatest wildlife area of Uganda, the chimpanzees, the forest, it’s time to say goodbye to Bwindi, breakfast and join your guide for the two hour transfer to Kihihi airstrip for your flight back to Entebbe, on arrival in Entebbe connect to your departure flight or proceed with your onward safari arrangements.
