Itinerary

Welcome to Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro International Airport, on arrival you will be met by your safari guide and transferred to the Legendary Lodge. Settle into for the night as you look forward to an exciting adventure of summiting the tallest peak in Africa and the world’s highest free standing mountain.

Legendary Lodge as the most outstanding cuisine and the best coffee, relax with a treatment in the spa or use the hotels steam room to bring the muscles to life after a long flight, as you prepare for your trek you can decide to stretch activities include mountain biking, short walks, tennis, squash or a running work out to work up a bit of strength for the next day.

Breakfast and transfer to the Machame gate to meet with your crew made up of guides, cooks and porters as you set out to scale Africa’s highest peak. This is the time that you have been waiting for, have taking in your vital health checks you take the first step towards making this challenge a reality.

Today’s trek, goes through the lush Afromontane forest, we have a picnic lunch on the way as we reach the Machame Camp, our home for the night. The porters will carry every time that we need to set camp, including your overnight rucksack, you will only carry your daypack. The accommodation today will be in a spacious 3 person pop up tent, with a mattress, pillow and extra thermal sleeping bag.

The climb today is steep and will gain altitude rapidly as we leave behind the Afromontane forest, and enter into the Shira Plateau a fascinating place with feature like glacial valleys and lava tubes, on the way look out for the massive lobelia plants. We shall stop on the way for lunch as we acclimatize.

Today we head out to Barranco Camp, it’s a full day walk as we leave Shira Plateau behind to the barren alpine desert, the place can be extremely cold so will need an extra layer of warm clothing. In order to acclimatize to the increasing altitude, we shall ‘walk high, sleep low’, which means we hike to a point above our camp site and later return to sleep low, to camp to rest. We shall head up to Lava Tower and then come back down to sleep at Barranco Camp. Barranco is famous for its giant groundsel plants (Dendrosenecio).

Breakfast and we head up to the glacial walls, walking through the valley to Karanga Camp, we shall have our lunch at the Karanga Camp, later in the afternoon you can relax in your tent or take the scenic walk to Kibo Cone and the take breathtaking views of the surrounding glacial valleys, this will also help in acclimatizing to the high altitude.
We continue our trek, with a short distance to Barafu Camp. We shall arrive in time for lunch, relax at the camp as we look forward to our next day to scale the treacherous Mawenzi Peak, the most challenging peak to scale. We will take an early supper, as we look forward to tackling the summit, rest as much as possible and the excitement builds as we shall have a very early start on the next day in very cold conditions.
We set out at midnight to begin our scale of the summit, different reason are given for this, one is the reward of getting to the summit as the sunrises, which can be spectacular at Africa’s highest point, the other is that it’s the best time to start, as you cannot see ahead, allowing the psychological benefit to keep to the challenge while lastly at this time the loose shale of the mountain is more stable the colder it is – whatever the reason, it’s time to achieve the challenge with the summit just steps away. Persistence and patience and with the careful hand of your guides, take the steps slowly by slowly to Stella Point from where a short trek arrives at the world famous Uhuru Peak, remember to take lots of water as dehydration makes altitude sickness worst. Take then famous photos of Uhuru Peak as you celebrate the greatest challenge having scaled the highest peak of Africa. Take your photos as you enjoy a quick snack and marvel at the sights from the peak, later begin your descent to Mweka Camp arriving by daylight, energetic and exhilarated to have conquered Mount Kilimanjaro.
Breakfast and walk back down to the starting point to be met by your waiting vehicle and driven back to your hotel in Arusha, take a hot shower and relax as you tell your stories of the feat just achieved – only for the adventurous few.
After a restful night well deserved, take a delicious breakfast before transfer to the Kilimanjaro International Airport to take your flight back home or you can also take advantage to head off to Zanzibar for some sun and sand or to safari, Arusha is close to the best wildlife attractions, Tarangire, Manyara, Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
